The Future is Looking Bright... by Terry Coulter

A little over a year ago, Terry Jolo Brand partnered with a business called Nineteenth Amendment. They are a newer startup company that partners with small and independent designers who have the talent and the fashion forward designs, but aren't ready to manufacture or market yet. They will take your looks and market them and when they sell to buyers, they manufacture them. This is good for a small business like Terry Jolo Brand because as well as filling our store with garments made in house, we are also extremely busy with custom design and alteration orders. This company takes a little bit of the stress off of us and it has done wonders for our social media presence.

We have had about 10 garments that we had been selling through Nineteenth Amendment and then something marvelous happened. Nineteenth Amendment has recently partnered with Macy's online division and is selling all of the looks on: http://www.macys.com/cms/ce/splash/nineteenth-amendment/index?cm_mmc=VanityUrl-_-nineteenthamendment-_-n-_-n

We have always enjoyed being partners with Nineteenth Amendment and we are even more excited to be selling through Macy's now. We have only had the store front for a little under a year now so we have no idea how else we will grow as a small business. I guess we will just keep doing what we love!

We Hear Wedding Bells... by Terry Coulter

Many you’re young, it is common to dream of what you want your wedding to be. I know that I have changed my mind so many times over the years about what color the napkins will be and who to invite or not. But one thing has always stayed fairly consistent, the gown.

I want a full tulle skirt, an illusion neckline and lots of fabric-covered buttons down the back. I have also always been a very visual person so I know exactly what I want it to look like. It’s a fun thing to think about, but how does one go about getting the dress that you have so vividly seen in all of your wedding dreams? Before you start Googling “Tulle skirt, illusion neckline and lots of fabric-covered buttons,” only to find dresses that are close, but not quite what you were thinking, try a different method.

Terry Jolo Brand is now accepting custom design orders for those dream wedding gowns and also wedding attire for the rest of the men and women in your bridal party. You can simply bring in a rough sketch or inspiration, or just describe what you would like and we will work with you hands-on to make the attire hat suits you and your wedding party.

We know that weddings can be one of the most stressful events of your life, so why should you have to go through a middleman? If you would like, we can source other things for you like shoes, accessories or even create custom accessories for you. We have many resources in the fashion industry that can be difficult for consumers to access.

We love everything about weddings at Terry Jolo Brand. They are exciting and you should feel confident in what you and your wedding party are wearing. Help us create what you are dreaming of for your big day.

It's Finally Happened... by Terry Coulter

At Terry Jolo Brand we are always creating new patterns but we have recently decided to start creating patterns and samples for menswear. Men come into the store all the time and they love that we make everything in house and a lot of guys talk about how it is really difficult to find dress shirts, pants and jackets that fit them right.

When a guy goes to an average store, it is hard to find colors and fabrics that really make you stand out. Don’t get me wrong, the basics are great, but there are fewer choices for men to look unique then there are for women. We would like to give men the opportunity to have a piece of clothing that nobody else has.

Every man is different so we do not stock menswear in abundance. At the store we do men’s orders in custom sizes so you can have the freedom to choose colors, prints and buttons and then you can walk a way with a garment that will last a long time and fit right.

As well as shirts and pants, we also have an array of unique ties and pocket squares to choose from so you can add a pop to your everyday look. Just stop by the store and we can set up a consultation right on the spot. If you have an idea in mind for something and we don’t have it on display, we can talk about making it happen!

A Fun, Cultural Flare by Terry Coulter

As many of you know, Terry Jolo is a Liberian-American and her culture often carries over into what we carry in the store! We love blending chic styles with beautiful African fabrics and we aren’t afraid to show it!

One of our top sellers right now is beautiful jewelry that was hand crafted in Kenya. When you look at these pieces they tell a story. They represent what Terry Jolo Brand is all about, which is supporting artisans no matter where they hail from. The bright colors of these pieces are sure to make a statement wherever you may go and they are also very versatile.

Another product we sell that has African flare is our cute new pleated purse. Terry is always acquiring African printed fabric so we decided to make these adorable little totes. They are unique and they give a pop of color to any outfit! They are also customizable so if you like the a certain combination of color or size, we can work that out for you!

Another great thing that we can do is custom design of course! We love custom design at the shop and we really take pride in it. If you are interested in our African prints, you can come into the store and choose from our wide selection of prints. After you choose your print, we can make ANYTHING you want.

Stop on by the shop! We encourage you to look, touch, and try things on. Check out our many products that have fun, African flare to them! Keep up with our blog posts too! There is so much more in store for Terry Jolo Brand!

Dear Aspiring Fashion Designer, by Terry Coulter

Dear aspiring fashion designer,

Before we chose fashion, there were so many fears, things to wonder and a general lack of knowledge of what the fashion industry was actually like. Here are some tips on how to decide if fashion is a great fit!

A great thing about the fashion industry is that there are so many options! When I started school I thought, “Oh yeah, everybody just graduates and works for a big designer and lives in a penthouse or something.” I forgot to account for the fact that everybody wears clothes, DUH! What I’m trying to say is that there are so many different types of jobs in the industry. You won’t just be sewing or designing. There is just so much to explore in fashion. We have textiles, technical design, fashion design, patternmaking and the list goes on. You may even discover that you like the business jobs like marketing or buying better. I would suggest doing a fair amount of research so you can go into school with a slight idea of where you may want to be in the industry. I see too many people leave the school disappointed that fashion shows and glitter aren’t a part of the everyday work.

Another tip I would give to someone who is thinking about pursuing a fashion education is that you do not have to be the reincarnation of Coco Chanel. The fashion industry is tough and shows like Project Runway make it seem like people magically have these skills. When you go to fashion school, they will teach you everything from the bottom. Here’s the catch though, you need to want success really badly.

My next point goes hand in hand with wanting success. Having a degree doesn’t automatically entitle you to a job. If you go to class, go through the motions and then think that the bare minimum will get you a job, you are in the wrong field. I  don’t mean to be harsh, but the fashion industry takes so much passion and although some parts are fun and spectacular, there are going to be parts of the industry that annoy you to your core. My philosophy has always been to take something out of every class. Some subjects may be dry, but when you get out into the field, it is great to be well rounded. That advice can pretty much be applied to anything you do in life. If you sit in the back of the class playing solitaire instead of soaking up as much as you can, there may be a situation someday where you could have used the info.  I am going to quote a very wise teacher from my alma mater, “If you aren’t willing to learn you will be treading water your whole career.”

Lastly and importantly, stay true to your design aesthetics. If you are constantly comparing yourself to other people, you can’t grow as a designer. Design styles you love, keep up with trends, and stay original. Every time you design something, ask yourself what sets you apart from the bunch. The fashion industry is competitive, but if you are constantly competing, it takes the beauty and fun out of design.

At Terry Jolo Brand, we are constantly being asked about what it is like to be in the fashion industry. There are so many aspiring designers in Pittsburgh and we hope that some of you take something away from reading this post. Remember, this was just the tip of the iceberg. Research your options and keep asking questions!

We Will Always Be Changing... For The Better, Of Course! by Terry Coulter

Hello followers! If you are a frequent shopper with us, then you definitely know that we are getting new and interesting items all the time! Well, one of the brands we just started carrying in the Boutique is Rigazze. Rigazze is a clothing design company for women, which specializes in contoured garments for women who have a fuller bust. The great thing about Rigazze is that they cater to a market that is under served. Their company started with a wardrobe malfunction, which is pretty common with women who are “blessed with the chest.” At Terry Jolo Brand, we are proud to carry Rigazze’s line and we eventually plan to tap into more markets that are underserved.

Women should feel on top of the world when they are wearing anything from their casual wear, to the biggest events of the year. Our team at TJB is always willing to hear our customer’s ideas. If there is ever anything in our store that you would like to see, please contact us or stop in the store. Trust me, we love to talk about the Brand and what we can do to give our customer that wonderful feeling that comes with a great outfit! Stop by to check out the new looks!

Why Alterations and Custom Design Keep Creativity Alive by Terry Coulter

We live in an era that demands a fast pace for almost everything. The latest technology, fashion, food and many other things. In the fashion industry, we are moving so fast to cater to the needs of people, that the creativity is getting lost. Years ago, quality and attention to detail were imperative and now if it falls apart in two weeks, we just run out and grab something else. Some may say the industry is dying, but at Terry Jolo Brand, we are looking at things through a different light. With this new fast-paced outlook, people are using the opportunity to be more outgoing with their style. Custom design and alterations benefit these type of people. When most people think of alterations, they think of a stuffy tailor. Another common misconception that people have is that people only have alterations on suits or gowns. At TJB we alter things from basic t-shirts to wedding gowns. Our philosophy is that if you love something enough and it isn't working out as well as it used to, bring it for a tune up. The worst thing to do is throw away a garment that you love. Another solution is custom design of course! If you own something that you love the style and fabric, but it is super worn or unwearable, we can make a brand new one to the best of our ability. Here is our favorite part of the business, CUSTOM DESIGN!!!! YAY! We love when people come in with an idea because that means that we can bring that dream to life! Custom design is commonly associated with high dollar amounts, but it really depends on what you want made. Since we make a lot of the boutique's garments in house, we have many basic patterns for things already drafted out. This will bring down the cost because there is less labor involved. Custom design is great because you can bring in photos, a sketch, a piece of fabric or just have an inspiration and we can make it happen. We all know how hard it is to find exactly what you are looking for, so this is a great option. Alterations and custom design keep creativity alive for so many reasons. Alterations make it so you can revamp or spice something you would otherwise throw away. Custom design lets you take home a garment that you love, that is handmade to the highest quality tailored not only to your size, but also to your style! We know the big stores move super fast, but wouldn't you like to shake the hand of the person who makes your garment? It's pretty cool when you think of it!
